Waianapanapa Caves
February 19, 2004 |
Waianapanapa State Park is located a short distance from the Hana Highway on the northeastern side of the island. The park includes the black sand beach, the caves, natural pools, and lava tubes. | |
The black sand beach of Wainapanapa is composed of volcanic stone that has been worn down into smooth, tiny pebbles by the ocean tides. |
A small opening in the rocks adjacent to the beach leads into a large hollow lava tube that opens into a rocky cove along the northern coast. |
The underground caves contain freshwater, cool and just right for swimming. |
